Charles V. Breakfield

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Ans. => It is a delightful experience that allows us to have fun with technology. We like taking complex concepts and turn them into silly acronyms so the reader can blip right along with the story rather getting stuck on the techno-babble.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Ans. => Family fun, Working in technology, speaking to people, cooking new recipes, and hiking. Uh don’t forget riding the Harley…, said Breakfield.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

Ans. => Burkey wrote a lot of poetry in high school so 14 or so. Breakfield and Burkey released a couple of non-fiction technology books in the 1990s which were not as much fun as the fiction is. Breakfield was writing love letters that kept coming back with edits and red-lines correcting the grammar in his college years.

What does your family think of your writing?

Ans. => They are very supportive and hoping for huge success. That way they have get a pool or a new kitchen.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Ans. => The biggest surprise was really about how hard the marketing side is and how critical. It wasn’t just creating a great story because there are lots of great stories out there. Sadly, not everyone wants to take the time to learn a new set of authors.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Ans. => 10 books. Favorite is sort of like asking which offspring is your favorite.  Kind of depends upon which one is aggravating or pleasing you at that time.

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they

Ans. => Writing is like many things, one needs to practice. You may not find immediate success, but it worth pursuing when it makes you have a new reason to get up each day. Study your genre competitors then go back and practice being the best author you can be.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

Ans. => We do hear from our readers, but we would really like more reviews. Some say that The Enigma Series would be a fun movie or series on television, while others say keep writing. We have one fan that simply devours the stories and insists they learn something as well as get entertained.

It’s very gratifying when they shoot us a note or call us and say, “I didn’t see THAT coming! OMG!” It’s also lots of fun when they “adopt” one of our characters because they like them so much.

Do you like to create books for adults or children…Why?

Ans. => Adults. Adults are able to grasp the complex topics more easily and frankly we do write a bit of romance.

What do you think makes a good story?

Ans. => Good characters, surprises, humor, and relevant subjects for today’s people.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

Ans. => Breakfield wanted to be a pilot, Burkey wanted to be a doctor. Ah well. We both ALWAYS wanted to be outrageously happy, famous, and rich!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Ans. => When we realized we could take a work must do thing (write technology documentation) and simply have fun creating stories on a foundation of information we already know. It is somewhat satisfying to eliminate those characters that are annoying. You know, like putting someone’s picture on a dart board. Not that we have every done that, but we bet you might have.

How long does it take you to write these books?

Ans. => Each story averages from 6-8 months to craft. Breakfield’s wife Sandy helps us out with initial editing and our beta readers keep us on our toes.  We are accepting beta readers, and really encourage folks to post reviews.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Ans. => Each of us like to write about 2 hrs per day and more on the weekends. Real jobs mean we must help customers in order to eat.

What brought you to write this book series?

Ans. => Honestly we simply wanted more fun with fiction and to help folks comprehend technology from an easier frame of reference.

How you become a published author? Any inspiration?

Ans. => Love of reading at very early stages in both our lives. They say everyone has a book in them.  We seem to have lots of them and want to share with people.  We chose self-publishing because we could do it our own way, though and agent with contracts in hand, could make us rethink that. The tools for self-published authors are so plentiful these days that it is almost easier than waiting for responses from established publishing houses..

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Ans. => The work we do, people we meet, and our own imaginations.

What’s next for you? What are you working on now?

Ans. => We are working on two books and have outlined several short stories we plan to pursue. The Enigma Dragon will be ready soon and then next year, The Enigma Source.  We are also working on the audible books side which provides a new dimension to the stories.

About your book/s

Ans. => The Enigma Series. Storytellers, Breakfield and Burkey, select a relevant technology target in each story and pit good cyber guys against bad cyber guys. These stories are for the 21st century. They combine history, technology, romance, intrigue, and humor set in today’s contemporary time frame.
